According to industry projections, this technology will represent only 10% of the region's connections in 2025. Colombia is projected as one of the main mobile phone markets.

The GSMA, an association that represents the interests of telephone operators around the world, presented this week a diagnosis of how the sector is doing in Latin America, especially after a year that represented enormous challenges in terms of connectivity and data traffic to root of Covid-19.

The report "The Mobile Economy in Latin America 2020" was launched within the framework of the GSMA Thrive Latin America event, which takes place virtually and brings together policy makers, digital leaders and innovators from the region. In it, the union projects a slow growth of 5G networks and says that Colombia will be one of the three most important mobile phone markets in the region.

The impact of Covid-19

According to the report, with the pandemic there was a 25% increase in mobile data traffic during isolation. The GSMA expects that by the end of this year, 57% of the regional population - almost 360 million people - will be connected to mobile internet. However, there are 300 million who still do not have access to this technology.

The isolation also had a “considerable” impact on the finances of the mobile industry, as, according to the report, the sector's revenues decreased in several markets in Latin America and this was reflected in more discounts offered by the operators. The situation also caused an increase in the use of fixed broadband connectivity, instead of mobile, and implied a reduction in the sales of devices.

"While revenue growth is expected to remain positive, it is expected to be in low single digits in the near future as the region's economies continue to grapple with the economic consequences of the pandemic," says the GSMA. .

5G in Latin America: at a slow pace

According to the operators, the era of the fifth generation of mobile technologies (5G) in Latin America began in 2020 with the launch of these services in Brazil and Uruguay. Progress is expected in mid-2021, with auctions of the 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz spectrum bands in Brazil. "In addition, regulators in Chile, Colombia and the Dominican Republic have announced their intentions to allocate 5G spectrum in 2021," says the association.
